Ulm/Hanover, 18.01.2018 - Uzin Utz AG initiates floorCODES - Start of Domotex 2018

With floorCODES, Uzin Utz AG, the world's leading manufacturer of product systems for flooring, the aim is to initiate an interdisciplinary dialogue with experts from the fields of architecture, design and craftsmanship, which at the same time gives creative impulses for the floor of the future.

Re-thinking the floor

With floorCODES, Uzin Utz AG, the world's leading manufacturer of product systems for flooring, the aim is to initiate an interdisciplinary dialogue with experts from the fields of architecture, design and craftsmanship, which at the same time gives creative impulses for the floor of the future. The future study will be carried out in cooperation with the Institute International Trendscouting (IIT) at the Hochschule für an-gewandte Wissenschaft und Kunst (HAWK) in Hildesheim, MEGA eG and Deutsche Messe AG. An impulse exhibition and practical floorCODES Work-Labs will be on display at the special exhibition area Framing Trends at Do-motex 2018 in Hanover.

How will people live in the future? What floor will there be? What function will it have and what will be relevant for the floor in interior design? The three-year study will provide answers and exploitable approaches to the future of flooring. Together with the floorCODES WorkLabs, it forms a mobile and interactive research and communication platform for architects, interior designers, the floor legend trade and interior decorators. With the floorCODES project, we would like to take up the results of our jubilee project "The future underneath us" and set new impulses for the future," explains Philipp Utz, member of the Management Board of Uzin Utz AG.

Future needs origin: Methodology of the future study floorCODES
For floorCODES, the IIT first researches the typical use of floor coverings in architecture. According to the principle of "Future Needs Origin", the researchers use the IIT HAWK's canon of methods to visualize the past and present. This is intended to document the development and use of floor coverings in the context of technical, social and design trends. In doing so, they are tying in essential aspects to the ideas of the study on the "Book of Origin" by Uzin Utz AG from 2011. Uzin Utz AG initiated the first project on the future of flooring with the aim of actively shaping the future of the floor, providing a glimpse into the history of the floor and far into the future, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. In addition to historical flooring science, various experts commissioned by the company, including designers, chemists, cave explorers, astronauts, dancers, architects and system theoreticians, had pondered the soil of the future - in order to sound out ideas, collect visions and dis-cover new things.

Impulse exhibition at Domotex
Within the framework of the future study floorCODES, the researchers at the IIT now want to retell, design and stage the story of the floor in a new way. To this end, the analysis of form, colour, surface and material in society from 1950 to 2017 will provide ideas for future models of thought. The first impressions are given by an impulse exhibition at the HAWK stand at Domotex 2018, which shows the data collected over a long period of time in the form of "cultural evidence" as a spatial development model from 1950 to the present day. This is intended to anchor the characteristics of space, design and style in society and culture.

WorkLabs deliver more ideas
The first impulse-giving scenarios for the floor of the future will be developed during Domotex, the world's leading trade fair for carpets and floor coverings. In the process, mobile floorCODES WorkLabs combine theory with practice: The partici-pants learn how trends are created and from which they have developed. Current trends can thus be explained and imagined for the future. The WorkLab thus represents the transition of contemporary thinking towards shaping the future and allows insights into the methods of futurology. Further mobile WorkLabs, in which the DNA of the floor of the future will be investigated, are planned for the coming months at further locations.
